The cast for the eagerly awaited second season of South Korean death-match drama Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular show ever, was announced over the weekend.
Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Gong Yoo, the four Season 1 survivors, will all return for more, Netflix announced at its Tudum fan event in Brazil on Saturday.
Announced newcomers include four male stars: Im Siwan (formerly of K-pop group ZE:A and known for film roles like The Attorney and Emergency Declaration), Kang Ha Neul (from K-dramas like Midnight Runners, When the Camellia Blooms), Park Sung Hoon (Netflix’s Korean hit The Glory) and Yang Dong Geun (from Disney+’s popular K-drama Connect).
Following the news, numerous fans flocked to social media to inquire as to why no female cast members had been revealed, especially in light of the model-turned-actress HoYeon Jung from Season 1’s meteoric rise to fame.
Squid Game‘s second season is not anticipated to premiere until some time in 2024. The next batch of episodes will be written and directed by series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who received an Emmy for his work on the show last year. The first season of the show was highly praised.
On September 17, 2021, Netflix released Squid Game. It gained 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days and finally reached 111 million Netflix accounts, quickly becoming a global hit. It continues to be the most watched series on the streamer.
The following year, 2022, it received an abundance of Emmy love, with 14 nominations and six wins, including the best actor trophy for Lee Jung-jae, the first Asian actor to ever take home the honour.
Netflix in Brazil stated that the reality show spinoff Squid Game: The Challenge will debut in November, though viewers will have to wait another year for more of the Squid Game plot.
